Introduction Metalworking is one of the oldest occupations of humankind. At the beginning of last century metalworking machine tools were invented and these were controlled by an operator who performed all the movements of the tool in order to obtain the final parts. Nowadays, metalworking using machine tools is one of the most important activities to support industries development and the most important of these industries is the automotive industry. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the generation of offset curves, considering both naive approaches and more sophisticated approaches such as the Voronoi diagram. The paper starts by explaining some basic concepts of offset machining, insisting on the most important types of compensation. The next section includes a discussion on different ways of representing curves in a computer program, starting with two-dimensional curves and ending with non-uniform rational B-spline curves (NURBS).
